Tips to take care of your post baby mental health

These are my tips for taking care of your mental health once your baby has arrived.  I understand that these may be easier to read (and for me to write) then for you to take action if you are feeling down but please do not feel that you should struggle on your own.  Help is available and it does not mean you are a bad mum for needing it – it means you are a great mum for acknowledging that fact.


  • Talk to your partner
  • Take one day at a time
  • Keep a simple schedule
  • Get plenty of rest and eat well
  • Remember no one is the perfect parent or baby so don’t listen to any feelings of guilt or inadequacy
  • Avoid sugar, chocolate and alcohol as they can have a depressant effect.
  • Join a mothers group or exercise class – please ask me for details
  • Say no to the demands of others
  • Take time for important relationships
  • Take some time for yourself
  • Be kind to yourself 
  • Yesterday has gone, tomorrow is to come – just focus on today
  • Close your eyes.  Take a deep breath
  • Ask for, and accept help
  • Parenting is hard, but you are the best parent for your child and you are doing the best you can
